Daiso to start charging GST at all stores starting next month

Shopping at popular Japanese variety-store chain Daiso will soon be a little more expensive than usual.

7% GST Charges

Starting from 1 May later this year, Daiso stores in Singapore will be charging the prevailing 7% Goods and Services Tax (GST) on all their products storewide.

A netizen spotted a price-change notice in one of the stores here.

Here’s what’s written on the notice:

“Dear Valued Customers,

Thank you for all your continuous support. We always strive to keep prices as affordable as possible. To continue improving the quality of our products, there will be a price change.

All prices will be exclusive of GST from 1st May 2022.

We thank you for your understanding and continued support.

Thank you for shopping at Daiso!”

Spare change

To be fair, Daiso Singapore has been absorbing GST charges on their items since launching its first outlet here many years ago. The restrictions and safe-distancing measures from the ongoing pandemic have affected many retailers in Singapore and it looks like Daiso is no exception.

Daiso currently has 29 stores (including Threeppy) across the island.

Some netizens have also wondered how Daiso will be rounding up or down new charges since items will be priced at $2.14 each and the hassle of getting back the change when using cash payments.

Or perhaps this marks the comeback of the 1 cent coins.

We shall find out shortly on 1 May.
